Thanksgiving – The Perfect Thanksgiving Meal

Thanksgiving Meal

As the fourth Thursday in November approaches, it is time to start thinking about the menu that you are going to share with your family on this national holiday. There are plenty of dishes that you could provide for your loved ones but if you are looking for a little bit of guidance, here are a few tips to ensure that you have a great day without any stress.

The Turkey

You can choose to buy several types of turkey for your feast. Choices include a fresh turkey, a ready basted turkey which has already been covered in vegetable oil, butter and seasoning or a free range turkey. You can also order your turkey well in advance and pop it in the freezer until it is needed. The size of the turkey will depend on the amount of people that you intend to feed. As a rough guide you will want to provide about 440-450 grams of meat per person. This should also leave plenty to use for leftovers.

Cranberry Sauce

The perfect accompaniment for any turkey is a side portion of cranberry sauce. Making your own batch of cranberry sauce will need sugar, orange juice and cranberries, fresh or frozen. You simply need to combine the ingredients in a pan and simmer on the stove for about 8-10 minutes until the sauce thickens.

The alternative to making your own cranberry sauce is to head on over to your local supermarket and purchase a can of ready made sauce. This is definitely the stress free solution.

Sweet Potatoes

This is a wonderful side dish that sits perfectly with a serving of turkey. It is a popular dish of the South which has now made its way to the table of many Americans who celebrate this day. There are lots of different ways in which this can be prepared. One method is to cover your sweet potatoes in oil, wrap them individually in foil and place in the oven for about 1-1.5 hours. When you remove them from the oven, scrape out the flesh and combine with a little maple syrup to taste.

Pumpkin Pie

A very traditional dessert for Thanksgiving has got to be the pumpkin pie. If there is a member of your family who loves to bake then this is the ideal opportunity to ask them to provide the Thanksgiving feast with their expert work. If you want to make your own there are lots of short cuts that you can take to make the job much easier.

The recipe for a simple pumpkin pie needs a pastry base, pumpkin puree, sugar, a selection of seasonings including cinnamon, allspice and cloves. To create this dessert within minutes all you need to do is to buy ready roll pastry and place in a cake tin. Add a tin of pumpkin puree combined with the sugar and seasonings and put in the oven. It will take about 40 minutes to cook. To serve you can spoon out a portion of whipped cream or ice-cream; Delicious.

These are just some of the dishes that people choose for their Thanksgiving meal. Get the whole family to join in with the preparation and you are sure to have a wonderful day.
