A Christmas Carol
A Christmas Carol is a classic Christmas novel written by Charles Dickens. There are several different versions of this story that have been made into films and musicals. Some are called A Christmas Carol while others are called Scrooge, who is the main character of the piece. You can choose the original black and white movie that was created in 1938 or you could opt for the updated musical movie that was made with the Muppets, called A Muppets Christmas Carol. This featured Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge and Kermit the Frog as the down trodden Bob Cratchit.
A more modern family favourite is a movie that is based on a children’s book called How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Written in 1957 by Dr Suess, the movie adaptation features the comedy actor Jim Carey. The story is set in the small fictional town called Whoville where a green coloured figure tries to ruin everyone’s Christmas by stealing all the Christmas presents. It all works out well in the end and everyone becomes friends. This is a lovely film to share with children, especially if they are a fan of the wonderfully illustrated collection of Dr Suess books.
It’s a Wonderful Life
If you want a little bit of nostalgia during the Christmas holidays then the black and white movie classic that everyone one should own is the film called It’s a Wonderful Life. This is another feel good movie and shows the true spirit of Christmas and the importance of family and friends. The film was made in 1947 and stars James Stewart.
It is about a man who wants to commit suicide because he didn’t have the life that he wanted. He believes that he is worth more dead than alive as his family can claim on his insurance. However his guardian angel, called Clarence shows him all the bad things that would have happened if he didn’t exist. It sounds a little maudlin but by the end of the film you will definitely have a tear in your eye and want to hug your nearest and dearest.
