How to invoke search engine right from the URL location bar of Chrome? How to add custom search feature to Google Chrome?
Do you know that you can search the web or your favorite website right from your browser’s location bar without visiting the search engine website? Google Chrome browser has a feature which allows you to do this, not only for Google.com search engine but also any other search engine just you name it. Google Chrome has the ability to auto-detect the search engines in the website you are visiting and adds automatically to your browser. You can see what are all the search engines configured in your Chrome browser and if your favorite search engine is not listed, you can just add it your self with less effort. We will show you how this works and then how to configure new search engines.
First we will see what is this feature. Go to your Chrome browser and in the location bar a.k.a URL bar type any text that you want to search using google.com search engine, and press enter. Google search engine would be automatically called up and the results were shown in your browser. It saves a little bandwidth and little time. If it is not working for you, then don’t worry, we will explain you how to enable this.
Now, we want to search for the same text using Yahoo search engine. Try to type in.yahoo.com, before you complete the full word you can see a suggestion in the url bar to press tab on your keyboard as shown in the below image.
Now, press tab button on your keyboard, which prefixes the search engine name in the beginning of the url bar and allows you to enter the search term. Type the text you want to search in Yahoo and press enter. You can see the yahoo search results immediately in your browser.
In-order to work with this short codes, your browser needs to be configured with different search engines.
I added a configuration entry into my chrome to search TechSmartLife.com posts directly from the location bar without visiting the website. The short i created is tsl. So the moment i enter tsl, the chrome should show the TechSmartLife prefix to the url bar and allow us to search TechSmartLife posts.
Goto the famous wrench icon and click on the Options. Under the Basics category, find for the word Search and click on “Manage Search Engines” button. Alternatively just type chrome://settings/searchEngines in your browser’s url bar.
The first column is the name of your search engine or search site, second column is the short cut code or keyword, third column is the actual search url which would be called for searching the text in a site. For most of the wordpress websites the url would look like http://www.techsmartlife.com/?s=%s
You can add new search sites by scrolling down to the end of the list in the above options page and input your search engine details. Remember, you can also change the existing keywords to a single letter, so that it would be easy to invoke the search feature with a single key press.
The advantage is not only reduce the keystrokes while searching but also reduces the unnecessary page loading time of the search sites. It would be useful particularly when you are working on a slow internet connection.
