How to disable Guest Login in Ubuntu 11.10

Last week i blogged on few of the features of Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot. During the login it is observed that Ubuntu 11.10 is having a default login for Guests. That means, any body can access your Ubuntu without having any password. That’s not good at all! I don’t want people to be able to use my computer without using a password to log in. So, here is the procedure to disable the guest login from Ubuntu 11.10 LightDM desktop.

If you’re using the default LightDM in Ubuntu 11.10, please follow the below steps

1. open the terminal and goto /etc/lightdm/

2. edit lightdm.conf file and add the allow-guest property as shown in the below

$ sudo su

$ vi lightdm.conf
[SeatDefaults]

greeter-session=unity-greeter

user-session=ubuntu

allow-guest=false

Save the file and restart Ubuntu. The Guest login would not be available now. If you want the guest session to be re enabled again, then either comment the allow-guest property (Commenting is prefixing the property with # symbol) or remove it.

If you’re using GDM (which was the default in previous Ubuntu releases), uninstall gdm-guest-session from the Software Center.
